. the porch at this home was destroyed. 34 tornadoes hit the southeast, the most ever in the u.s. on christmas day. years of drought in texas made the dry trees vulnerable to high winds. in arkansas, more than a foot of snow made for a rare day of sledding. more than 200,000 people have no power in the south. as the storm heads east, heavy rain is flooding parts of south carolina, blowing snow causing white-out conditions in indiana and ohio. and blizzard warnings are posted as far north as maine. this storm is wrecking travel plans. more than 900 flights have been canceled across the u.s., with more expected in the next couple of days. here at reagan national airport, freezing rain is delaying some flights. but many passengers are stuck because of snow at their destinations. >> a cancellation? >> reporter: dorian friedman and her daughter were going to lansing, michigan. >> i had a bad feeling on the way here and said, i don't see any planes taking off or landing. so we weren't surprised. but it's a little frustrating. >> reporter: this storm is now bringing snow, freezing rain and high winds

mcafee is staying at a miami beach hotel and working to stay in the u.s. so far, he says that u.s. authorities are not trying to question him in the death of his neighbor in belize. mcafee has been wanted for questioning in that country but he insists he did not kill anyone. he fears for his life if he returns to belize. >> this is not about a murder investigation. this began on the 30th of april of last year when 42 armed soldiers stormed my property shot my dog in the head. held me in the sun handcuffed with my hands behind my back for 14 hours destroyed a half million dollars of my property and let me go with no charges. >> john mcafee is now asking the state department to expedite visas for his 20-year- old belizean girlfriend and another friend. >>> susan rice is waving a political white flag withdrawing her name from consideration for secretary of state. the u.s. ambassador to the united nations was once considered a front-runner to take secretary of state hillary clinton's post but her comments following the deadly attack on the u.s. embassy in benghazi sparked a washington

marriage in california is still on hold tonight. the u.s. supreme court could have announced today whether they would review prop 8. instead the justices announced that they will wait until friday to discuss whether to take up the case. legal experts say the delay ruling means nothing. >> it's like we have so many cases on the docket. let's put this one off next week, no big deal. that's really what happened. it really isn't the dog that didn't bark, but it's the case that has not been resolved yet and we're still waiting. >> professor little says he expects if the court grants a review that we'll know by friday. but if the court decides to deny or simply postpone the review again, that announcement will come later. >>> a desperate search is underway for a sick child tonight. security cameras of the phoenix hospital show the 11-year-old girl leaving with her mother last week. she had been undergoing treatment for leukemia and has a heart catheter that could become infected without treatment. police are watching the mexican border, but say the family has relatives here in california as well
